About Us

WARMED is a research project entitled “Development of NO-based approaches for guided white adipose tissue browning. Can we tackle metabolic diseases by heating up/cooling down the fat?” (Grant No. #6066747). The project is implemented under the Program for excellent projects of young researchers (PROMIS) supported by the Science Fund of The Republic of Serbia.

We Employ Innovative ideas & Scientific excellence

Our goal is to engineer Trojan adipocytes to overcome metabolic diseases from inside.

Mammals have the natural ability to dissipate chemical energy obtained from nutrients as heat. This process is unique to brown adipose tissue, and it enables the survival of newborns and hibernators at low temperatures. We aim to use specific redox-active agents to convert energy-storing white adipose tissue into energy-wasting brown adipose tissue as the groundwork for personalized cell-based therapy for obesity and metabolic diseases.

Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" - National Institute of Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade

The Institute for Biological Research “Sinisa Stankovic” is one of the oldest institutions devoted to studies in biological sciences, not only in Serbia but in Southeast Europe. IBISS is a scientific institution dedicated to fundamental research in different fields of biology and related applied disciplines and is equipped with a wide range of equipment for cell biology and molecular biology.

Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade

Faculty of Biology is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions both for education and research in Serbia. In 2007, the faculty founded the first Center for Electron Microscopy that remains the most respected national microscopy center. Faculty of Biology offers a wide range of high-quality equipment (light, electron, fluorescent, confocal microscopes, and fully equipped histology laboratory) and a dynamic atmosphere that facilitates the collaboration between experienced experts and young researches.

Faculty of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad is one of the largest medical faculties in Serbia, which is in particular known for its close association and collaboration with prominent medical facility, Oncology Institute of Vojvodina. Such close collaboration between an educational and research institution with a clinical center is fruitful ground for state-of-the-art translational research that bridges the gap between clinical studies and basic research.
